Victoria’s controversial machete amnesty bin program, which has cost taxpayers $13 million, has netted more than 1,300 weapons in the first two weeks of operation, according to the state government.

An additional 3,400 machetes have been surrendered by major retailers, and a further 10,800 weapons have been seized by police so far this year.

Since being introduced across police stations in Victoria on September 1, the amnesty bins have been met with criticism due to the multimillion-dollar price tag of program that has given the state 45 bins.

Despite the price tag, police minister Anthony Carbines said he expects people to dispose of weapons so they don't land in the hands of the wrong people.
