After months of calm in Mobile’s mayoral race, the first political shot has been fired.

A campaign flyer, paid for by a political action committee connected to the Alabama House Democrats, calls former Judge Spiro Cheriogotis a MAGA Republican.

It marks the race’s first negative turn just one week before Election Day when voters will decide Sept. 23 whether Cheriogotis or state Rep. Barbara Drummond will be Mobile’s mayor for the next four years.

The flyer, paid for by the Alabama Works PAC, founded by Alabama House Minority Leader Anthony Daniels, includes an image of Cheriogotis with President Donald Trump. It then suggests that Cheriogotis accepted a Republican Party “loyalty clause” that prevents candidates from backing anyone other than GOP nominees.
