Signs advertising junk removal, internet services, yard sales and homes for sale can be seen around Weslaco in public.

The city is now using a state law to punish those who put up the so-called “bandit signs” without permission.

House Bill 3611 went into effect on Sept. 1, 2025.

Officers with the city of Weslaco’s code compliance office spent their Friday morning ripping the signs off from light poles and grassy areas near the expressway.

“Some of these signs obstruct traffic and that is a safety issue,” Weslaco code compliance officer Bo Soria said.

HB 3611 increases fines for people and business owners who put up the signs on medians, sidewalks and roadsides.

The first violation will set you back up to $1,000. Those violating the law three or more times will be fined up to $5,000.
