ROBERT Redford, Hollywood's golden boy who went on to become an Oscar-winning director and environmental champion, has died at 89.

The actor passed away early Tuesday morning at his home in Utah, surrounded by family, his publicist confirmed.

He died in his sleep, though no cause was given.

"It was the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved," said Cindi Berger of Rogers & Cowan PMK.

Redford's career spanned more than five decades, with box office smashes, critical acclaim, and the founding of the Sundance Film Festival.

But away from the screen, his life was scarred by unimaginable heartbreak, including the loss of two sons, health battles, financial setbacks, and the early death of his mother.
