President Donald Trump is taking heat from his critics after he severely overestimated the number of Americans who die from drugs.
Trump made the wildly false claim when a reporter asked him about Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro’s contention that the U.S. strike on a boat of suspected drug smugglers was illegal.
“What’s illegal is the drugs that were on the boat and the drugs that are being sent in to our country, and the fact that 300 million people died last year from drugs,” Trump said. “That’s what’s illegal.”
The U.S. has a population of around 340 million, meaning that more than 88% of the country’s citizens died last year from drugs, if Trump’s claim is to be believed.
Even if Trump meant 300 million deaths due to drugs around the world, the claim is still wildly inaccur
