SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCBD) — Dorchester County EMS has launched a community paramedic program designed to ease the strain on the 911 system and connect residents with the resources they need before situations turn into emergencies.

The program began just a month ago, and leaders say it is already making a noticeable difference. Community Paramedic Angelina Johnson has responded to 27 calls so far. In more than half of those cases, she was able to handle the situation herself and free up an ambulance for other emergencies.

Johnson said her job goes beyond answering calls. She often works one-on-one with families to find the root cause of repeated 911 calls. In one case, she discovered that a patient’s wheelchair and lift equipment were broken. By arranging for repairs and home health visits
