People in Wethersfield turned out to vote on Tuesday for a referendum to renovate and build elementary schools in town.

The Wethersfield Town Council passed a resolution to appropriate $239 million to build a new Highcrest Elementary School and renovate Samuel Webb Elementary and Charles Wright Elementary. The state is projected to cover 73% of that.

“The reimbursement rate that we're getting from the state is unprecedented. We're getting essentially three schools for the price of one. We can't pass this up. We will fail our children and our teachers, our educators, if we do. And it also then feeds into our economic development,” said Jane Roets, a Democrat on the Wethersfield Town Council.
