Officials have adjusted the city's public records policy to deny requests that are “solely for commercial purposes.”

The change follows a public records request from law firm for 200 reports for crashes involving two vehicles.

Karen Moses, associate city attorney, said she understood why the firm requested those records, but the city should be allowed to spend its resources elsewhere.

“The obvious purpose behind that request is for the law firm to solicit the people involved in those accidents and to increase their customer base, which as a lawyer, I have absolutely no problem with,” she said. “But I do have a problem with that being done at the expense of the city’s resources, and that’s what’s occurring with these public access requests for commercial purposes only.”
