Tasmania’s Planning Commission has recommended against the construction of the almost $1 billion Macquarie Point Stadium.

The commission ruled on Wednesday that the project was too large for the site and would burden the state with unsustainable debt.

The ruling puts the Tasmanian Devil’s AFL team on thin ice, ahead of their entrance into the competition in 2028.

If the stadium fails to be developed before that time, the team would have to play further north in Launceston for the first year or two.

“In very simple terms, the stadium is too big for the site and the benefits it will bring are significantly outweighed by the disbenefits it creates,” the assessment panel said.
