VERNON, Conn. — Vernon Public Schools officials say that providing students with healthy and nutritious meals is a top priority.
A registered dietitian is in place to oversee school nutrition, and a farm-to-school coordinator is tasked with enhancing meals, bringing farm fresh foods directly to students and strengthening relationships with local farmers.
Now, the district has hired Chef Tom Turvil to further incorporate locally produced fruits and vegetables into school meals, have more scratch-cooked offerings and train cafeteria staff.
According to a release from Vernon Public Schools, Turvil joined the food and nutrition team in late spring and spent the summer creating a multi-faceted program to improve the meals that are now being served to students.
