WATERBURY, Conn. (WFSB) - A proposed plan by UConn Health to acquire Waterbury Hospital and potentially two other financially struggling hospitals has drawn cautious support from state lawmakers.

The proposed bid also raised questions about how the deal, which could exceed $500 million, would be financed.

The state-backed academic medical center is considering purchasing Waterbury Hospital from the bankrupt Prospect Medical Holdings, as well as acquiring Day Kimball Hospital in Putnam and Bristol Hospital, in what could become a significant expansion of Connecticut’s public health care infrastructure.

UConn Health has yet to file a formal bid in bankruptcy court, but internal documents reviewed by lawmakers estimate the cost of acquiring Waterbury Hospital alone between $400 million and
