A senior citizen in Ontario was robbed in broad daylight in what authorities are calling a distraction theft. The incident occurred earlier this month around 3:30 p.m. ET at the victim's home.

Hamilton police have released video footage of the crime, which shows a 40-year-old female suspect ringing the doorbell. When the elderly homeowner answered, the suspect greeted her with a hug and a kiss. During their conversation, the suspect placed a fake necklace around the victim's neck while stealing a gold necklace from her. The elderly woman appeared unaware of the theft, thanking the suspect for the greetings and the fake jewelry, which she seemed to perceive as a gift.

Police are seeking the public's assistance in identifying the suspect, sharing the video with the caption, "Can you help us identify this suspect?"

Distraction thefts have been on the rise in Hamilton. In 2021, there were nine reported cases. That number surged to 54 in 2024, with 43 cases reported from January to August of this year.

Authorities have noted that victims are often targeted based on their age, perceived trustworthiness, or language barriers. In a separate statement, Toronto police advised that victims should not confront suspects but should call the authorities immediately.

"Get a good description of the suspect(s) including physical and clothing descriptions, any tattoos, scars, and other prominent features," police said. They also urged witnesses to note details about any vehicles involved, such as license plate numbers, colors, and makes, as this information can aid in recovering stolen property.
