A council says it stands ready to consider any plans to formally recognise and celebrate the life of former boxing champion Ricky Hatton. It follows the launch of a petition hoping to secure backing for a statue of 'The Hitman' in his hometown of Hyde , Tameside .

Hatton was found dead by his manager at his home in Gee Cross, Hyde, last Sunday morning. He was 46 and his death isn't being treated as suspicious by police.

Tameside Council has now released a statement to the Manchester Evening News honouring one of Greater Manchester's most famous sons.

A spokesperson said: "We are happy to consider and understand how Ricky Hatton’s career and contribution to the community can be recognised in Tameside. This needs to be done at the appropriate time when the family can be involved
