ST. LOUIS, Mo. (First Alert 4) - Two St. Louis Metropolitan Police officers died while off-duty Tuesday, according to the department.

Officer Malik Baker of District 4 was killed while on his way to work in a crash along Interstate 55 in Illinois on Tuesday. He had been with the department for four years.

Also on Tuesday, District 2 Sergeant James Sanders died after losing his battle with cancer. He spent 31 years with the department, staying dedicated to service even through his illness.

SLMPD is asking the public to keep the department and officers’ families in its prayers.
