ASHEVILLE - Pisgah Legal Services has laid off 12 employees in recent weeks as the free, civil legal aid, anti-poverty advocacy nonprofit has faced budget cuts resulting from lagging funding for North Carolina Medicaid programs.
The positions make up just under 10% of the nonprofit's approximately 130 staff members, Pisgah Legal Services Executive Director Jackie Kiger told the Citizen Times. Funding for two programs related to North Carolina's Medicaid program resulted in the layoffs, Kiger said. State agencies and regional organizations warn more cuts could come amid President Donald Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill."
