ROCK ISLAND, Illinois (KWQC) - U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois is proposing new laws to protect children from the dangers of AI chatbots.
Parents testified in congressional hearings this week that their children harmed themselves or committed suicide after chatting with an AI bot about their mental health. In one case, an AI chatbot even gave a child advice on how to tie a noose.
“Then it was the cutting, and from there his mental health went down,” said one anonymous mother. “He stopped eating and showering and taking care of himself. And then it was suicidal.”
Durbin’s legislation would allow states and private citizens to sue AI developers who cause harm.
