COLUMBIA — S.C. Election Commission Director Howard Knapp was fired from his job after two years as state election czar, several sources confirmed to The Post and Courier.
Knapp, who was easily confirmed by the S.C. Senate in 2023, was removed from office in a closed-door session of the Election Commission’s board of directors on Sept. 17.
The five-member body had been meeting in executive session about several ongoing lawsuits against the agency.
No reason was given for his dismissal.
“The South Carolina State Election Commission voted today to remove Howard Knapp as Executive Director, effective immediately, expressing a desire for new leadership,” Chairman Dennis W. Shedd said in a statement.
