The family of a Hanover County high school student who died after being struck by a freight train in 2023 filed a civil suit this week seeking compensation for damages.

The suit seeks more than $8 million from CSX, the national rail line, in relation to the death of Chris Asare-Budu. The 15-year-old was struck by a CSX train on his morning walk to school.

Asare-Budu was struck while walking down the center of the train tracks while wearing earbuds, according to the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office.
