AUSTIN, Texas — Former U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has pledged $16 million to the University of Texas at Austin, his alma mater.
The gift will benefit the School of Civic Leadership, the Cockrell School of Engineering and the Longhorn Band. The School of Civic Leadership will receive $5 million to support students, faculty, facilities and operations. Another $5 million will go to the Cockrell School of Engineering for study abroad opportunities.
The Longhorn Band will receive $3 million to support its legacy and an additional $3 million to fund scholarships for eligible engineering students who are also members of the band.
Tillerson said he chose the programs because he believes they had the greatest influence on his success as a student.
