YUMA (AZFamily) — Yuma residents are preparing for a wet Thursday as a tropical storm pushes across southern Arizona, bringing the potential for heavy rain and flooding.
City workers opened a sand pit on Wednesday and distributed sandbags to residents seeking to protect their homes from flooding.
Mark O’Malley, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service , said he is tracking heavy rain and thunderstorms for the area but expects totals to vary.
“Some areas in Yuma may see nothing whatsoever. Some areas might see up to an inch of rain,” he said.
For Yuma residents, even an inch of rain can cause major problems. The Sept. 4 storm brought flooding to several homes , forcing some families in one neighborhood to gut their flooring due to water damage .
