LEWISTON, Idaho – The Lewiston Police Department has issued a warning to residents about a rise in scam calls falsely claiming a loved one has been kidnapped.

These fraudulent "kidnapping" robo-calls are designed to create fear and urgency, police said.

The caller often demands money be sent immediately through wire transfer, mobile payment apps or gift cards.

The police department has confirmed that no actual kidnappings have been linked to these calls.

Scammers frequently use caller ID spoofing to make the call appear as though it is coming from a local or trusted number. They often discourage victims from contacting law enforcement or family members
