WAIHEE (HawaiiNewsNow) - A brush fire on Maui scorched one acre, but took firefighters more than 10 hours to extinguish.

Fire officials said mop-up took an extended time due to the lack of access and water.

The blaze along River Road was reported at around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Area residents said they heard an explosion before they called 911, and worried that flames were closing in on neighbors’ homes.

“Oh my god, this is so crazy,” a resident said in video of the blaze.

The fire was contained at around 9:30 a.m. and fully extinguished by 6:45 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Fire officials said the brush fire also burned abandoned cars and rubbish.

No structures burned and no one was hurt.
