SOUTH FULTON, Ga. — An independent investigation into the South Fulton Police Department and its chief, Keith Meadows, will move forward after Mayor Khalid Kamau opted not to veto the City Council’s decision to approve the review. Meadows has been on paid leave since late July pending the outcome.

The investigation had been delayed for several weeks after the council approved it, while the mayor considered issuing a veto. He had previously cited a less than two-year-old operational review as the reason to block the new investigation, calling it redundant.

Mayor Kamau publicly expressed his opposition in a newsletter sent to residents just before 3 p.m. Tuesday, in which he also alleged that Councilwoman Helen Willis led a committee that instead sought a $117,000 operational review.
