A student-led initiative is putting laptop computers in the hands of students who would otherwise go without.

The Student Laptop Access Program (SLAP!) has only just begun and already 24 students are on the list to receive laptops, four of whom have already received theirs.

This never would have happened had it not been for Gabriel Bergeron, a Grade 12 visionary at Bayridge Secondary School, who recognized a problem that some of his fellow students were facing while attending the school’s Computer Science Specialist Program (BCSP).

“While doing a group project, I realized that most of my groupmates couldn’t contribute outside of school hours because they didn’t have laptops that could handle any outside work at the scale on which we were working,” Bergeron said.
