ROBESON COUNTY, N.C. (WBTW) -- A first-grader has been suspended for a year after bringing a gun into Pembroke Elementary School, the district said on Thursday.

The gun was found in the boy's possession on Thursday, according to the district. He will face a 365-day suspension.

The weapon was discovered after a staff member pulled the student aside after noticing an unusual object on his side, the district said. The boy was immediately separated from his class after the handgun was discovered.

The school day continued to operate on a normal schedule and there were no injuries, the district said. Local law enforcement is investigating.
