KENTUCKY (WKYT) - Today’s Good Question is: Why are we paying for the upkeep on buildings owned by utility companies?

Utilities are allowed to pass along some of the costs of doing business to their customers.

It’s kind of like if you go to a restaurant, the cost of their rent and electricity is included in the meal, even if it’s not explicitly stated.

Although utilities are more regulated when it comes to what they pass along to their customers.

In a presentation on utility ratemaking, Kentucky’s Public Service Commission said allowable expenses included routine construction like replacing poles and new lines, purchasing equipment, general operations and even the cost of their personnel, like salaries. And, once major construction is in service, they can also include that cost.
