CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - A new monument is honoring a historic figure from our region.

This monument honors Jane Ferguson.

She was the mother of Booker T. Washington.

Ferguson was a slave in Virginia before she traveled with her family more than 300 miles to the Mountain State.

Now, a monument honors her contributions right by her grave side.

You can view the monument for yourself at Spring Hill Cemetery Park and Arboretum on Farnworth Drive in Charleston.
