Liberal Senator Sarah Henderson has unleashed on the Albanese government’s “ridiculous” 2035 emission reduction target, claiming it was “nonsensical” Labor would reach the 62 to 70 per cent figure it aspired to.
The government on Thursday revealed its “ambitious” climate target of 62-70 per cent reductions of carbon emissions on 2005 levels.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese told reporters the target was set on the advice of the Climate Change Authority, chaired by former NSW Liberal treasurer Matt Kean, and framed it as being “in the national interest”.
He described the goal as “an ambitious but achievable target” after his cabinet agreed upon the figures on Thursday and announced the government would commit a further $8.275 billion to fund the nationwide shift to renewable energy.
