FRANKLIN, N.C. (WSMV) - Three people are dead after a small plane flying from Nashville crashed in North Carolina Thursday afternoon, according to the Macon County, NC officials and FlightAware data.

WSMV sister station FOX Carolina reports that a plane crashed near Iotla Valley Elementary School at around 3 p.m.

FlightAware data shows the Cirrus SR22T plane took off from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville at 12:41 p.m. (CDT) before it crashed in North Carolina.

According to the FAA, the plane is owned by Brett Cornelius, of Brentwood, Tennessee. At this time, the identities of those killed in the crash are unknown.
