BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox ’ 5-3 loss to the Athletics at Fenway Park on Thursday:

1) The Red Sox dropped their three-game series to the .471 Athletics, 2-1, to fall to 83-70. Cleveland, meanwhile, finished off a three-game series sweep of Detroit, narrowing Boston’s lead for the final wild-card spot to 1.5 games.

2) Two errors by Trevor Story led to the Athletics extending their lead to 4-2 in the third inning and 5-2 in the seventh. It was Story’s seventh career two-error game and second this season.
