The Dallas Mavericks are bringing back veteran guard Dennis Smith Jr. on a one-year contract, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Selected No. 9 overall by Dallas in the 2017 NBA Draft, Smith Jr. earned All-Rookie honors in 2017-2018 but played just a season and a half with the Mavs before he was dealt to the New York Knicks as part of the midseason trade that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas.

With Kyrie Irving recovering from a torn ACL, Smith Jr. will get an opportunity to compete for a roster spot in training camp. The Mavs also added guards D’Angelo Russell and Jaden Hardy in the offseason.

Smith Jr. spent last season with Real Madrid in the EuroLeague following stints with the Detroit Pistons, Portland Trail Blazers, Charlotte Hornets and Brooklyn Nets.
