CINCINNATI, Ohio — A Cincinnati man pleaded guilty Thursday to his role in an online-romance scheme that defrauded more than $2 million from multiple victims.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio says Richard Opoku Agyemang, 41, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court to one count of money laundering stemming from a transfer of $32,000 of fraud proceeds in 2022. Prosecutors are recommending a sentence of up to 41 months in prison.

According to a news release, individuals used stolen photos and false information to create online profiles on dating websites. They would establish online romantic relationships with victims, then trick them into sending money for “medical expenses” and other fake reasons, prosecutors say.
