COLUMBIA, S.C. — Tropical Storm Gabrielle continues to strengthen in the Atlantic, and forecasters say it could become a hurricane before the end of the weekend. As of Friday, Gabrielle was holding steady with winds near 50 mph while tracking to the west-northwest at about 10 mph.

The storm is expected to gradually curve northward over the next few days, staying well out to sea. Current forecasts show Gabrielle’s center passing at least 140 miles east of Bermuda from late Sunday into Monday.

While the track keeps the storm offshore, forecasters caution that even small changes could bring stronger impacts to the island. There is currently a 20 to 25% chance that Bermuda will see tropical-storm-force winds.

Even if the center stays away, Gabrielle will still bring effects to Bermuda.
