KANSAS CITY, Kan. (KCTV) - A Wyandotte County Detention Center officer is charged with second-degree murder in an inmate’s death . Richard Fatherley, who is now on unpaid administrative leave, is accused of unintentionally, but recklessly, killing 50-year-old Charles Adair on July 5.
Adair had been arrested the day before on misdemeanor warrants for failure to appear on multiple traffic violations, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation . An autopsy report said Adair died of asphyxiation after someone put their knee on his back during a struggle.
The charging document gives an alternative charge of involuntary manslaughter. Both are felonies. Fatherley has not been arrested, nor has a warrant been issued for his arrest. Instead, a criminal summons was issued for Fatherley to
