Georgetown County native Melissa Jefferson-Wooden sprinted to the 200-meter title in Tokyo on Sept. 19, becoming the first U.S. woman to win both the 100- and 200-meter races in the same world championship.

She completed the first women's 100-200 double at worlds since Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in 2013, winning in 21.68 seconds — a .46-second margin over surprise silver medalist Amy Hunt of Britain.

Her time in the 200 was the fastest in the world this year and the eighth-fastest of all-time. Her second gold at the worlds comes after winning gold in the 100 meters on Sunday. She won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics last year in that event.
