• Numbers are hard: House Republicans embarrassed themselves again during a committee hearing in which they grilled D.C. elected officials, including Mayor Muriel Bowser, Council Chair Phil Mendelson, and Attorney General Brian Schwalb. During a particularly telling line of questioning, Arizona Rep. Eli Crane, in his attempt to grill Schwalb about low prosecution rates, cited numbers from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, not the D.C. Office of the Attorney General. The U.S. attorney for D.C. is appointed by the president and prosecutes local adult crime. The D.C. AG is elected by District residents and prosecutes juvenile crime.
