Detroit police shot and wounded an armed suspect Thursday on the city's east side after turning toward officers with the weapon, officials said.

The shooting happened at about 10:20 p.m. in the area of Kelly and Moross roads, according to authorities.

"Prayers for him and his family," First Assistant Detroit Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald said during a media briefing Thursday near the scene. "Hopefully, he pulls through and he can recover."
