After years of a legal back and forth of wanting to get rid of illegal ATVs and dirt bikes in New Haven, the city is taking a big step in doing so.

On Friday morning, they crushed dozens that were seized by a regional task force involving the Greater New Haven area and beyond.

“I am delighted to see the dream become a reality,” First Selectman Michael Freda of North Haven said.

That dream started about five years ago for New Haven, but state law at that time was restricting them. After a new law (Public Act No 24-80) was signed this year, municipalities can now enforce steeper fines for violators and choose to either sell the illegal vehicles or destroy them.
