A man shot by a Detroit police officer after he was stopped for suspected gun possession and chased is in critical condition in the hospital, according to a department official.

The shooting occurred around 10:20 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 18 as gang intelligence officers were conducting an investigation, Detroit police assistant chief Charles Fitzgerald said at a media briefing posted online by Fox 2 .

“They approached this individual, they thought he appeared to be armed and he took off running,” Fitzgerald said. He did not specify the location and the department did not immediately respond to Free Press questions Friday.
