LANSING, Mich. (WILX) - The iconic glass floors at the Michigan Capitol are attracting a growing number of visitors as they undergo a new preservation project.

The glass floors were first installed in 1878. But, over time, nearly 700 tiles have been replaced.

Rob Blackshaw with the State Capitol Commission says the tiles were believed to have been damaged by a fire on the ground floor of the Capitol. He says this project should refresh the tiles and return them to their original glory.

“You shouldn’t tell the difference between what is old and what is new. That is our goal; that is conservation, that is restoration,” said Blackshaw.

The restoration is happening in five phases. Phase one is replacing 111 tiles and preserving 105 original ones.
