Pack the school buses, head east from Fremont-Mills High School to WACO (Wayland), or vice-versa, and you're looking at more than 4 hours on the road.
The schools are separated by nearly 250 miles — Fremont-Mills in southwest Iowa, WACO in eastern Iowa — and weren't scheduled to meet this fall. But both 8-player teams had an open week and found a willing host near the mid-point between them.
WACO's scheduled opponent for tonight, Lone Tree, canceled their season before playing a game. Like several other schools, Lone Tree was dealing with low turnout this fall and couldn't field a varsity team .
Fremont-Mills also had a free night.
So, instead of taking the week off, the teams will meet at 7 p.m. on Central Decatur's field in Leon. The home team is playing at Colfax-Mingo this week.
