City of Newcastle (CN) is hoping to utilise “Rail Bridge Row” in its quest to provide more affordable housing in the CBD.

It follows the lodging of a development application (DA) to enable the investigation and remediation of any former mine workings located underneath the 4,125 sqm site, which stretches from Brown Street to near the intersection of Darby and Hunter streets.

Rail Bridge Row, as it’s commonly known, sits opposite the Crown Street light rail stop.

It was purchased by council, from the Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation (HCCDC), in 2020 and earmarked for a multi-storey mixed-use development, offering affordable housing units alongside ground-floor retail.
