Students at McCay Elementary School in Fitchburg got an unexpected long weekend but it’s not one the custodians are likely happy about, after a skunk sprayed a classroom Friday morning.
The skunk entered the building at 1:30 a.m. on Friday and made its way into a classroom, according to a statement from Fitchburg Superintendent Johnathan Thompson.
It’s not clear if the skunk was looking for knowledge or food. What is clear is it released its undeniable and hard-to-ignore skunk spray.
“When our school department arrived to investigate, they confirmed that the skunk was contained to one classroom but indeed sprayed,” Thompson said in his statement. “Out of the abundance of caution and to ensure the health and safety of all students and staff, we made the decision to cancel school today.
