Water at the Chase Street well in Gary will be tested for arsenic and other dangerous contaminants after years-old federal data revealed high levels of the element were present in the water.

The artesian well, which sits on land owned by the Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission, is located near the roadway's intersection with West 35th Avenue and has been a local landmark for decades.

The well, which is regulated by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management, is classified as a "transient public water system," because it does not regularly serve at least 25 of the same people over a six-month period each year. Rest stops and campground water supplies fall under the same classification.
