BROOME COUNTY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) - Broome County Sheriff Fred Akshar released a statement saying he is setting the record straight on the costs of housing ICE detainees at the county jail.
Akshar says any claims that holding detainees on behalf of the federal government is costing Broome County taxpayers are false and that it's actually the opposite. He says the number of federal and state detainees represents a net increase in funding and a net reduction in tax burden.
Many community members have voiced concerns over ICE detainees being held in the county jail.
Broome County Legislator Mary Kaminsky resigned from the Sheriff's Reentry Reform Advisory Group earlier this summer in protest, saying the county is at risk of being sued and taxpayers would be left paying the price.
