ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Ala. (WIAT) -- The St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency is taking steps to keep you safe during severe weather.
Charles Brown built a storm shelter in his barn around 20 years ago.
“It's just a 20-foot shipping container that got bolted to the floor here. It's good for light storms or something when the wind's blowing hard,” said Brown.
Brown has spent his fair share of storms in the shelter. On Friday, he realized that if his family was in the shelter and a storm came through and left them stuck in the shelter, no one would know where to find them.
“I never thought about it. It just never, never engaged my brain,” commented Brown.
That’s why the St. Clair County EMA is asking people like Brown to register their shelters. The idea came from Shawn Windham.
