BANGOR, Maine (WABI) - Women in Aviation International is recognizing its 11th annual Girls in Aviation Day Saturday.

The nonprofit’s Bangor-based Eleanor Spear chapter celebrated the occasion Friday with a group of area students.

“Today’s event is just to expose girls that there is so much in this field that you can get into. There are so many opportunities and it’s one of the best jobs out there,” said Oakland native Cassie Bates.

Bates is the president of the Eleanor Spear Chapter of Women in Aviation.

The group is trying to grow a footprint in Maine, in part to show girls what’s possible.

“A lot of girls growing up don’t think it’s an avenue they can take. They just haven’t been exposed to it. We’d definitely love to see more girls and women come through,” said Bates.
