BELLINGHAM, Wash. — When you've been a brewery's unofficial "mother" for 30 years, saying goodbye is kind of like a funeral.

"We're just hugging and laughing and crying and hugging and laughing and crying," said Janet Lightner, owner of Boundary Bay Brewery, known to many as "Mama J."

"And it's just been all the stages of grief," added marketing director Shanna Sheridan-McInnis.

After three decades as an integral part of Bellingham's taste, culture and fabric, the beloved brewery is closing forever. Boundary Bay Brewing is tapping out, marking the end of an era for what many consider the heart of the city.

Waitress Adrienne Thompson knew she had to work at the brewery when she first walked in 13 years ago. On the brewery's final days, she came prepared for the emotions ahead.
