Kelso fell into a big hole in the first half and could not quite rally, falling 31-21 to Bellarmine Prep of Tacoma in a non-league game Friday in Kelso.

Birk Johnston threw a pair of touchdown passes to Luke Shaw in the second quarter as the Lions took a 17-0 lead into halftime.

Johnston’s third touchdown pass put Bellarmine up 24-7 after three quarters.

Mason Hanson had a 59-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and Kainoa Fili added 1-yard touchdown run for Kelso as the Hilanders cut the deficit to 24-17.

But Johnston’s fourth touchdown pass, an 18-yarder to Josiah Moeckel, sealed the win for Bellarmine.
