Savion McCoy had two touchdowns taken away by penalties.

He did get to keep perhaps the biggest one Friday night as his third touchdown of the game sealed the victory for the Columbia River Rapids over the Mark Morris Monarchs 35-16 in the 2A Greater St. Helens League opener for both teams.

Columbia River (2-0) had not played since a 33-28 Week 1 victory over 1A Seton Catholic, a team Mark Morris (0-3) lost to 45-20 in Week 2.

“The bye week was amazing,” River senior Luke McWilliams said. “We were pretty beat up from the Seton game. We showed more energy this week.”

The Monarchs’ run-heavy offense — 318 rushing yards on 50 attempts — proved challenging for the Rapids in the first quarter and into the early part of the second.
